  About Vigil For Civility!
This website is 100% about doing something... NOW!

This site has no partisan axe to grind, while any V4C "member" might be one of the most partisan people you'll ever meet. This site is a simple creation for people who want to express something higher than partisan lust for power. Namely, CIVILITY. This site is here for members of all parties who, despite their choice for president, value civil discourse and expect our leaders to rise above the fray on election day and accept the results.

Anyone who agrees with these 2 points I believe will want to join with us:
  1. If the election results end up being fought over in courts, we all lose.
  2. Prayer, fasting, hunger striking, etc. are valid and effective means of appeal to both God and men that we stand for something better. We expect something better.

What Vigil for Civility is not:
  • It is not a creation of a political expert trying to bring religion into the election.
  • It is not the product of an organization, but an open source gathering place with no other agenda.
  • It is not tax free 501(c)3, a 527, or anything other than an effort of a private citizen linked with like minded people to meet an emerging need head on.
  • It is not a place to read a lot of commentary and get a news fix.
  • It is NOT a place to rant for your guy.
  • It is not a site to be taken lightly. :-) All members are committed to making a difference for civility!

Vigil for Civility was conceived on Saturday, October 23rd 2004, and the site was launched on Tuesday, October 26th 2004 in a whirlwind of concern over doubts whether Bush-Kerry could avoid the same fate as Bush-Gore. We threw it together so as many people as possible could participate in a concerted prayer vigil for civility on the final five days of the presidential campaign. We looked around on the web to see if anyone else was already doing it. No one was, so we put out a press release and got national attention, as well as decent participation. When it all ended well, we declared it a success and got on with our lives. Who says a website has to live longer than a week?

The recent events now in 2008 have brought up very troubling concerns once again. Even though reporters declared the 2004 election "the most important in our lifetime", no one for a minute now thinks it measures up to all that is at stake this year. Passions are running high, and so are the accusations on a hundred different fronts. So, with all that and a very close race at hand, we decided to pull VigilForCivility.com out of the dustbin and spruce it up for primetime once again. This time we have a whole extra 5 days to prepare, so the vigil will run for 1 week, Wednesday through Tuesday, Nov 4th.

From the founder...
I believe people need to avoid living in disgust over the state of politics today and expect better, believing that by linking arms, dirty politics cannot thrive. I know for myself, if I don't make a special effort, my attitude begins to slide into cynicism and complacency. DO NOT LET THAT HAPPEN TO YOU! Join us today by lending your voice to the vigil.

I and others on the advisory board are available for media events on or before the vigil. Each participant will contribute time and individual spiritual discipline as their conscience dictates and their schedule allows. Nationally recognized leaders are welcomed to join the prayer vigil and the advisory board. In fact, we call upon the two candidates to make a statement on the subject and pledge not to stand by in self interest that would undermine the stability and character of the system. America is watching.
